DESCRIPTION:For his exhibition at SLOMA\, San Luis Obispo-based artist Barry Goyette shows a series of portraits taken by a very specific mulberry tree as a site for portrait photography guided by the models\, of varying stages of life. Attempting to reverse the traditional dynamics of power in portrait photographer\, Goyette offers his camera in service to those he photographs\, and they bring their own props\, costumes\, and stories – with the beloved mulberry tree as a key motif in all the images. Utilizing aging techniques in photography\, Goyette seeks to activate slower ways of looking in the history of the medium. \nAbout the Artist\nRaised in California and based in San Luis Obispo\, Barry Goyette specializes in photographing people for advertising\, and has expertise in a broad range of video and design services for a diverse clientele. Known for bringing a sophisticated\, story-driven point of view to both his personal and commercial projects\, Goyette has distinguished himself as a creator of unique\, client-specific imagery for over 25 years.

This is an incredible opportunity to provide access to the arts for all! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCal Poly Arts is presenting 10 free concerts throughout a weeklong engagement – including for students at Shell Beach Elementary\, Creston Elementary\, and Santa Maria-Bonita School District\, TMHA – Transitions-Mental Health Association\, HASLO – Housing Authority of San Luis Obispo\, HASBARCO – Housing Authority of the County of Santa Barbara\, and ECHO – El Camino Homeless Organization. \nThanks to our generous donors\, all of these private performances are provided at no cost to the schools or organizations. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE CONCERT TRUCK’S FOUNDERS \nNICK LUBY \nNick Luby is an artist that breaks boundaries and challenges the status quo. He has won prizes in numerous competitions\, most recently the 2019 Prix Ravel. Nick has concertized throughout the U.S. and in France\, Italy\, and the Czech Republic\, and his recordings have been broadcast on public radio. \nNick holds the Graduate Certificate in Performance from the University of South Carolina\, an MM in Piano Performance from the University of Michigan\, and a BA with honors in Music and a double major in Philosophy from Wesleyan University. His primary teachers include Arthur Greene and Marina Lomazov\, and he has received additional tutelage from Nelita True\, William Bolcolm\, Robert Levin\, and Ivan Moravec. \nA Chapel Hill native\, Nick maintains a successful teaching studio in Baltimore\, where he resides when not on tour. His students have won international competitions\, and he was a featured guest artist at the Exploring Chamber Music Festival at the University of Northern Iowa. \nSUSAN ZHANG \nAcclaimed as a pianist with “astounding musical authority” (Columbia Free Times)\, Susan Zhang made her orchestral debut at the age of twelve with the Augusta Symphony. She has since been featured as a soloist with the South Carolina Philharmonic\, the Aiken Civic Orchestra\, the University of South Carolina Symphony\, and the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra. She has performed in Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre and Woodruff Arts Center as well as numerous other venues in North America\, Europe\, and Asia. Her recordings have been featured on SC Public Radio. \nSusan was a prizewinner of the Thousand Islands Chopin Competition\, the Bauru-Atlanta Competition\, the Burgos International Music Festival Competition\, the Arthur Fraser International Piano Competition\, South Carolina MTNA Young Artist Competition\, and the University of South Carolina Concerto Competition. Her summer festival appearances include Pianofest in the Hamptons\, the Banff Piano Master Class\, Burgos International Music Festival\, the Southeastern Piano Festival\, and Brevard Music Center. \nSusan is a graduate of the Eastman School of Music\, Peabody Conservatory\, and the University of South Carolina. Her primary teachers have included Marina Lomazov\, Joseph Rackers\, Enrico Elisi\, and Boris Slutsky. Susan currently serves on faculty at the Gilman School and Peabody Conservatory.

SUMMARY:Cal Poly Arab Music Ensemble Winter Concert
DESCRIPTION:The Arab Music Ensemble presents a wide range of folk and popular music from Arab society as well as selected seminal pieces from the historically interconnected areas of Southwest Asia and North Africa. \n\nA suite of instrumental and vocal pieces celebrated across Arab society will be a highlight of the program. It will feature a wide range of rhythmic modalities with pieces ranging from four to 17 beats per measure\, as well as examples of muwashshah\, a genre of poetry and music that stems from 10th-century Andalusia in the southern Iberian Peninsula. \nA Romanian folksong and Ottoman Turkish dance piece will also be performed\, and a song made famous by the Lebanese singer Fairuz which is an arrangement of the second movement of Joaquín Rodrigo’s “Concierto de Aranjuez.” Ensemble member Samuel Shalhoub will conduct the ensemble in his own arrangement of the work. Shalhoub teaches in the Liberal Studies Department and Music Department at Cal Poly. \nOther composers\, poets and artists that will be represented in the works performed include Anton Pann\, Badi` Khayri\, Farid al-Atrash\, Ibrahim Touqan\, Mohammed Flayfel\, Sayyid Darwish and Ziad Rahbani. \nCritically acclaimed guest artists will return to join the ensemble on stage: Ishmael\, a renowned qanun (zither) player of Assyrian heritage\, performs wide-ranging repertoire from across Southwest Asia North Africa; Fathi Aljarrah\, a master kamanja (violin) player and multi-instrumentalist\, hails from Aleppo\, an artistic center of Syria and larger Arab society; and Faisal Zedan\, a virtuoso percussionist from Syria\, excels in musical styles from across Southwest Asia North Africa\, and plays riqq (tambourine)\, daff (frame drum) and darabukka (goblet drum). \nSan Luis Obispo dance director Jenna Mitchell will lead the dance troupe in original choreography that dialogues with the music in a longstanding collaboration of bringing music and dance from the region to Cal Poly. \nKen Habib\, a composer\, performer and ethnomusicologist\, will direct the event. The show will include one of his original compositions and arrangements. \nThe Arab Music Ensemble is an orchestra and choir with vocal and instrumental soloists. Its membership represents a range of majors on campus and professions off campus. The dance troupe has a similar composition and has collaborated with the Arab Music Ensemble since its formation in 2006. \n

DESCRIPTION:Cal Poly Choirs ‘Traditions’ Concert will feature 100 Cal Poly alumni in the celebration of choral music of the past\, present and future. \nCal Poly graduates from the last 40 years will form the alumni chorus. The group will be co-directed for several choral gems by Cal Poly Professor Emeritus Thomas Davies\, and Director of Choral Activities and Vocal Studies Scott Glysson. \n“The Cal Poly choral program was my home away from home while I was a music major\,” said Danna Damandan (Music\, ’23). “I am so thankful for the way it influenced my life\, and am very excited to return to the choir room in the Davidson Music Center and Performing Arts Center to make music with amazing friends\, and meet different generations of phenomenal choir alumni!” \nChuck Hill (Social Sciences\, ’93) added: “I can’t wait for this concert! It’s going to be so great to see and sing with all of my Cal Poly Choir friends. I just hope I can still carry a tune.” \nMark Fugate (Business Administration\, ’85\, MBA\, ’99)\, was so impacted by his experience in the choral program that he and his wife\, Stephanie\, generously established the Thomas H. and Susan A. Davies Choir Endowment last year in honor of Davies and his wife\, Susan\, who accompanied the choirs. The fund supports the student choir experience\, including travel\, recruitment\, professional student development and other enhancements to students’ choral experience. \nUniversity Singers will open the concert with traditional favorites including “How Lovely Are the Messengers” by Felix Mendelssohn\, as well as modern selections like Byron J. DESCRIPTION:SLO Museum of Art is proud to a present the upcoming exhibit For the Time Being by artist Adam Parker Smith. This exhibit will be on display from March 23-July 7\, 2024. \nFor the Time Being\, a collection of eight objects by Adam Parker Smith\, brings together works that reflect on our contemporary existence\, and celebrate the present moment. With themes that include the fleeting nature of time\, pushing boundaries\, joy\, and connection\, this work invites a closer look to things that may not be what they seem. \nParker Smith’s engages the charged history of Pop Art – one that integrates imagery from popular culture\, and commercial\, mass-produced objects. Parker Smith takes these objects and materials – pool floats\, sleeping bags\, synthetic balloons\, shag carpet\, even spaghetti – and uses them to visually reference ancient objects that symbolize the passing of time. Amphora (Bradley Cooper) takes an object that originated in the Neolithic period to hold dry goods\, water\, food – but also as grave markers or urns – and infuses an element of pop culture. The fusion of classical form and contemporary celebrity prompts a reflection on the nature of fame and society. Sleeping bags as Sarcophagi (an early Roman stone coffin typically reserved for the wealthy) depict rest as a metaphor for time\, inviting viewers to contemplate how sleep connects to the eternal rhythms of life. Forever Yours plays with weightlessness and constraint\, symbolizing the nature of time as it simultaneously floats by and holds us in its grasp. \nAbout the Artist: Adam Parker Smith’s practice is primarily sculptural\, relating to painting\, wall relief and appropriation. Following an extended conceptual project that consisted of Smith stealing his colleagues’ work\, the artist turned toward a more traditional – perhaps earnest – approach to art-making. Working largely with ‘faux’ materials of all sorts\, Smith creates highly composed\, brightly colored sculptures and wall pieces that flirt with the surreal. Smith has exhibited work nationally and internationally\, and has been written about in Art in America\, Artforum\, the New York Times and the New Yorker. For the Time Being is Smith’s first Museum exhibition on the West Coast.
